During my travels, I have a keen interest in both large airplanes and massive ships. Last year, after a stargazing trip to Joshua Tree National Park, I decided to stay a night in San Diego. Hotel Exterior and Common Areas

The hotel is situated in downtown San Diego, within walking distance of the USS Midway Museum and a short drive from the zoo, making it an ideal choice for tourists. The Manchester Grand Hyatt comprises two towers aligned northeast-southwest, providing excellent views from most rooms. The lobby is spacious and grand, with a touch of Japanese influence in the decor.

I was assigned a room in the northwest tower, requiring a walk to the Harbor Tower for the rooftop bar. Along the way, you’ll pass by the gift shop and lobby bar.

Bay View Room

The room, despite being a standard business hotel style, was comfortable and practical. The best rooms are corner ones with views on two sides. The standout feature was the floor-to-ceiling window, offering a stunning view of the bay and the USS Midway Museum.

From the window, you could see the active naval ships, including the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) and USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72). The bed was extremely comfortable, although the in-room phone and some furnishings showed the hotel’s age, despite a renovation in 2013.

The room included a TV, a work desk, and a basic coffee machine. The bathroom was equipped with French brand Balmain amenities, which were a bit too oily for my taste. There was also a walk-in closet and complimentary bottled water.

Top of the Hyatt | Rooftop Bar

The hotel’s rooftop bar is well-known for its urban resort vibe and excellent views. It is a must-visit for anyone staying at the hotel.

The Market | Breakfast

The Market offers a decent breakfast selection. Despite inflation concerns, I opted for eggs and coffee, enjoying a leisurely meal by the window.

Memorable Moments

San Diego, one of my favorite US cities, offers a bustling harbor and a vibrant Asian community around Convoy St and Clairemont Mesa Blvd, featuring many fine dining options.

The waterway next to the hotel is busy, and although I missed seeing the Zumwalt-class destroyer DDG-1000, I did spot the USS Essex (LHD-2), an amphibious assault ship, and the USS San Antonio (LPD-17), a dock landing ship. Also, the USNS Mercy, a hospital ship known for its COVID-19 relief efforts, was present.

Nearby, the Joshua Tree National Park is famous for its unique Joshua trees and rock formations, perfect for stargazing and rock climbing. Even with limited time, a day trip to the park can cover famous spots like Skull Rock and Arch Rock, especially beautiful at night when the crowds thin out.

Conclusion

Highly recommended for first-time visitors to San Diego. The Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego offers unbeatable views and a prime location. As a Hyatt Category 4 property, it provides great value, whether you’re paying in cash or using reward points.
