Overview of Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport Hotel

This trip was planned on short notice at the end of June for a holiday in early July, including a five-night stay in Amsterdam. As a loyal Hyatt customer, I preferred Hyatt properties. Compared to Marriott and Hilton, Hyatt has fewer options in Amsterdam: Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht, Hyatt Regency Amsterdam, Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport Hotel, and two SLH properties in the city. Due to the peak tourist season in July, city hotels were extremely expensive (Hyatt Regency: $280/night, Andaz: $530/night, SLH: $350/night). After an expensive trip to Spain and Austria in April, I decided to stay at the more affordable Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport Hotel ($112/night). This decision turned out to be convenient for my subsequent flights from AMS.

With limited benefits for Hyatt members, I received a minor room upgrade (from a standard king room to a high-floor king room) and complimentary breakfast. There was also a handwritten welcome card, which might be considered a perk.

Overall Evaluation: The location of Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport Hotel is excellent, making it a viable option for tourists without worrying about traveling to the city center. However, the service was slightly rough around the edges due to the hotel’s positioning. While I encountered some great staff, there were also unpleasant experiences during my stay.

In-Room Experience at Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport Hotel

Despite being a standard room, it was over 30 square meters and not cramped. The room featured a 1.8-meter bed, a desk, a U-shaped sofa, a wardrobe, and a full-wall window (some rooms offer a view of the planes taking off, but noise is minimal with the windows closed). The bed was firm, providing adequate support, although it lacked the enveloping comfort of a Simmons mattress.

The minibar included a fridge without a temperature control switch and was empty of drinks or snacks. The room offered instant coffee and tea but no coffee machine.

A welcome letter and a bottle of water with two packs of snacks were provided, though it’s unclear if these were Hyatt member perks. Unfortunately, the snacks were cleared away by housekeeping before I had a chance to eat them.

Amenities included only shower gel, shampoo, and facial soap. Slippers, toothpaste, and toothbrushes were not provided. As it was my first stay at a Hyatt Place, I was unsure of the service standards and had to request these items from the front desk.

Dining at Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport Hotel

During my stay at Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport Hotel, I had breakfast three times. The menu was identical each day, offering a standard continental breakfast without any variety, making it easy to get tired of. The breakfast spread included about six hot dishes (vegetable stir-fry, chicken sausages, scrambled eggs, fried bacon, fried tomatoes, and boiled eggs), a bread section, a juice station, a cold cuts and cheese section, and a cereal station with milk and yogurt. The food was overall decent but lacked variety.

One incident during breakfast shocked me. The hot food station is connected to the kitchen by an open window, with no barrier between the staff and guests. While I was getting chicken sausages, I overheard a male staff member telling a female colleague, “I don’t know what’s the taste of the chicken sausage, but I think you know mine.” She blushed, and our eyes met, making me uncomfortable. This seemed like workplace harassment, inappropriate for a public setting.

Memorable Moments at Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport Hotel

This trip was quite unfortunate. I lost my suitcase in Copenhagen, and my flight to Amsterdam was rerouted to Rotterdam due to issues at the Dutch airport, causing additional unnecessary trouble. When checking in at the Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport Hotel, I had nothing but my backpack. I had to borrow a Type-C charging cable from a front desk staff member who resembled Charlie Puth.

The next day, my room was mistakenly treated as a checkout room due to the absence of luggage and the empty look (I had locked my laptop in the safe). The hotel cleaned the room thoroughly and even opened my safe. They apologized and waived my taxi fare to the airport since I had an early morning flight. However, I had to borrow another charging cable because the first one was taken during the cleaning.

During checkout, my attempt to use a UnionPay card failed, so I had to use a Visa card for the pre-authorization. Despite clearly requesting to use UnionPay for the final payment, the front desk charged my Visa card. The staff apologized, claiming they misunderstood my request. This issue highlighted the service and attitude problems rather than a communication barrier, as my English is proficient.

Conclusion

This trip was a mix of extreme joy and significant setbacks. I won’t dwell on the unfortunate events but will share some highlights instead. Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport Hotel offers a convenient location and decent amenities, making it a practical choice for travelers. However, there are areas for improvement in service and communication.
